The pages are of the slightly coarse variety, they're writable, don't allow ink to bleed through and make the process of writing enjoyable.However, the gem protrudes out quite significantly and it's a hassle to write on the pages behind the gem, the entire left side of the book that is, I removed mine eventually bcoz it became too distracting.
